Shear Diamonds was formed in 1997 to explore for diamonds and other metals in Canada's North.

Shear's main focus prior to the acquisition of the Jericho diamond mine was exploration at the Churchill diamond project where Shear discovered 88 kimberlites, making Churchill a newly discovered diamond district in Canada.
